چکیده
Anecdotal evidence suggested that hopelessness and helplessness (HH) were often reported by undergraduate medical students. It is known students are more susceptible to high levels of stress depression than other student groups. There currently concern about suicide rates in drop-out junior doctors. But what can be said HH within this population? This study was aimed at eliciting students’ experiences HH. An interpretive phenomenological approach adopted. Participants recruited from a single school. Loosely structured, audio-recorded interviews carried out. Recordings then transcribed verbatim, underwent an analysis. Three participants recruited. Their stories report some devastating – ranging social isolation homelessness suicidal ideation. Our cases complement the existing literature. Awareness issues raised these may help educators better understand support others similar situations. These also benefit those experiencing themselves. We hope exploratory project paves way further study.
